THE swollen corpse of 41-year-old Dick Murray was fished out of the Pomeroon River around 17:30hrs on Monday morning.
It was reported that the labourer had been seen paddling a canoe with two other persons on board, at Malborough, Lower Pomeroon River, about 08:00hrs on his way home when tragedy struck.
He lost his balance and fell overboard after a speedboat with a high power outboard engine passed close to his vessel at great speed.
The two who survived said that the high waves generated by the speedboat rocked their canoe violently, which caused the victim to fall into the deep.
Reports said several persons in another boat that was passing rushed to offer assistance but by the time they reached the scene, Murray had disappeared.
His wife, Zamorra Murray said her husband’s body was recovered by a group of residents who searched for him.
The grieving mother of three said the deceased suffered serious injuries to his face and head and she suspected they were caused by the propeller of the engine of the boat that had gone to his rescue.
His remains are at the Charity Hospital Mortuary on the Essequibo Coast awaiting post-mortem, while the police are carrying out investigations.
