Digicel/PowerAde Schools Football C’ships : Carmel beat Brickdam Secondary on penalty kicks : … Bush Lot drub Rosignol 9-1

POOR and ill-advised penalty kicks from Brickdam Secondary led to their exit from this year’s Digicel/PowerAde-sponsored nationwide Schools Football Championships, as they suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Carmel Secondary when the two sides met at the Ministry of Education ground yesterday afternoon. At the Number 5 ground in West Berbice, Bush Lot Secondary drubbed Rosignol Secondary 9-1 in their fixture while the two contests that were scheduled for the Queen’s College ground between Houston Secondary and Ascension Secondary, and North Georgetown versus St George’s were rescheduled, due to the unavailability of the venue.
At the Ministry of Education ground, a scrappy affair ensued between Carmel and Brickdam, with the former enjoying a much better ball possession over the latter, but failing to capitalise on the numerous goal-scoring opportunities that came their way, either because of selfish play or fabulous custodial work.
As early as the 12th minute of the contest, Carmel’s Marlon Nedd wormed his way through the midfield and defensive lineup of his opponents and after eluding an advancing Darren Marks (Brickdam custodian), hit the uprights of an open goal, much to the dismay of his teammates.
Two minutes later Marks affected a brilliant save when faced with a one-on-one situation with Nedd, while he also denied Kester Glen later down in the half, as his side took the lemon time whistle with a clean score sheet.
When play resumed in the second half, Nedd and his troops went in search of the go-ahead goal, but every time they did so, a sturdy and resilient Marks ensured his team was still in with a chance, denying their valiant efforts in true heroic fashion.
Nedd had the golden opportunity to send his team into the lead, but instead of playing with his teammates, he displayed a selfish attitude in the hunt for glory and was easily dispossessed by Marks on the near post, while Glen and two other players were free on the far post.
At the other end of the field, Brickdam’s Travis Brandis failed to tap the ball into an open goal, after he eluded his marker and the advancing Carmel custodian, while a Wesley Greenidge header denied Marks from piercing Carmel’s net with a well-placed free kick taken from just over the halfway line.
The excitement that followed shortly after was not much to shout about, with Nedd scoring from an offside position, while Brickdam’s Malachi Adonis’ header was weak and feeble, creating no problems for Carmel’s custodian, as the Charlestown-based educational institution completed the win via penalty kicks that followed the final whistle.
In other matches, Leonora Technical blanked Goed Fortuin 12-0 at Den Amstel, with Javel Stephens hammering in six goals in the 2nd, 38th, 44th, 49th, 78th and 82nd minutes, Jamal Bentick a brace in the 5th and 42nd minutes, while Miguel Williams (23rd), Richard Blackett (27th), Alex Moore (89th) and an own goal accounted for the other goals.
At Skeldon, Skeldon High defeated Corentyne Comprehensive 3-0, with goals from Safari Esau (10th), Marvin Bentick (25th) and an own goal in the 80th minute of play while Dora Secondary gained a walkover from Supply who were a no-show at the Grove ground.
