PPP extends condolences to families of Bosai accident victims

THE People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has expressed deep condolences to the families of the three Bosai workers who were killed in an accident recently at the bauxite company’s East Montgomery Mine site, in Region 10. Speaking yesterday at a press conference at Freedom House, on Robb Street, Georgetown, Minister within the Ministry of Finance, Juan Edghill said party members visited the families of the deceased and those injured in the hospital, and were assured that everything was being done to ensure proper care is given.
Michael Williams, 45, of Kumaka Mines, Linden; Trenton Gardner, 62, of Industrial Area, Linden; and Kester Grant of Block 22, Wismar, were pronounced dead on arrival at the Linden Hospital Complex. Fabian Anthony and Marlon Pollydore, who sustained serious injuries, were admitted to the hospital.
Police had reported that the driver of a motor pick-up attached to Bosai Minerals Group lost control of the vehicle while travelling in the East Montgomery Mines at Linden, and ended up under a heavy-duty lorry that he was in the process of overtaking. As a result, the heavy-duty lorry ran over the pick-up, crushing the occupants inside.
Meanwhile, also present at yesterday’s press briefing were Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall; Minister in the Ministry of Finance, Juan Edghill, and Media Coordinator, Romel Roopnarine.

LOSS OF HUMAN CAPITAL
Edghill said the loss of lives in any part of Guyana is viewed as the loss of human capital, and that as a developing country, Guyana can hardly afford to lose its resources. He subsequently made a special appeal for people to exercise due care and caution on the roadways.
He said he was quite satisfied that such an emergency could have been dealt with at the hospital in Linden, rather than having to transport the accident victims all the way to Georgetown.
“This speaks to the development of the health care service available at the regional level. The hospital had a functioning theatre to undergo the surgeries, personnel were in place to provide intensive care treatment and surveillance and monitoring and the young men are on their way to recovery,” Edghill said.

BLOOD DONATION
He also highlighted the goodwill of the people in Linden, particularly the students of Linden Technical Institute, who donated blood.
Bosai, too, has indicated that it is doing everything possible to work with the families. “They must be commended for the manner in which they have responded,” he said.
