In New Amsterdam… : Town Clerk, other staff join weekly cleaning campaign

THE New Amsterdam Mayor and Town Council (M&TC), in an effort to lead by example, is currently conducting a weekly campaign, in which the administrative and statutory staff join the labourers in tidying sections of the township. altThe joint exercise is the brainchild of the Acting Town Clerk, Mrs. Sharon Alexander, who joins in it on Fridays, when areas mostly targeted for indiscriminate dumping and where bushes grow, are cleared.
Over the past few weeks, the municipal employees have been working along Angoy’s Avenue with the hope that they would sensitise other citizens to practise proper disposal habits and to develop a sense of community awareness.
In an invited comment, Alexander told the Chronicle she is happy her staff is supporting the initiative and she hopes members of the public can soon become involved.
“A lot of people would, normally, pass and commend us for our efforts, but we wish that some of them would dedicate a few hours of their time each week and support our campaign,” she stated.
She remains optimistic that only collaborative action by the M&TC and residents of New Amsterdam would help to restore the township to its former glory.
“We need the support of everyone; New Amsterdam is our town and we all need to play an integral role in ensuring that it remains clean,” Alexander emphasised.
The inadequate number of labourers has left the municipality with a tough task to focus on all areas simultaneously and the Acting Town Clerk is hoping that persons can be attracted to the job and work towards a cleaner town.
