THE Environmental Health Department (EHD) of the New Amsterdam Town Council in Berbice has put M. Ali & Son Supermarket, at Lot 15 Main and Pope Streets, under scrutiny for expired goods.
That happened after the authority confiscated a second set of unwholesome foodstuff within a month.
Last Thursday, acting on complaints from consumers, a team from the EHD swooped down on the business place and discovered a number of items on display in one part, but further checks inside the supermarket revealed more on shelves and in the storage bond.
Environmental Health Assistant Tiffany Jordan told the Guyana Chronicle that the proprietor was displeased about their sting operation, became irate and verbally abused the inspectors from her department.
“He told us that we want to take the expired items home and use them. So I told him that there is no truth to his rantings. I told him that we treat complaints as priorities and we have our duties to lawfully execute,” she related.
WELL KNOWN
Ms. Jordan stated, further, that the supermarket is well known for selling such goods and consumers who purchase them without paying attention to the expiry dates, usually, endure a tough task when trying to negotiate their return with the owner.
She declared that Ali is a very arrogant person and wants everyone to be comfortable with his unscrupulous way of doing business.
He fails to understand that the public’s health is at risk and at the expense of him making a profit, Jordan remarked.
She said, almost every time her department conducts its campaign against expired goods, the Ali Supermarket is found culpable and the proprietor was warned on several occasions to desist from the malpractice.
Amongst the merchandise seized during the most recent sting operation are soy milk, butter, oil and cereal.
“He claims that we are making his entity a target but he needs to do the right thing and we wouldn’t have reasons to have him under scrutiny. Only last month, we seized almost a van load of items from his supermarket and he still had more expired goods in stock which we didn’t find,” Jordan stated.
She said the Mayor and Town Council (M&TC) will be imposing hefty fines on Ali and any other business entity caught with a substantial amount of expired goods, she warned.
