GTM/GCB Under-19 Inter-County : Selfish Sattaur, Chanderpaul almost cost Demerara victory

EGOTISTICAL displays of batting from Demerara openers Brian Sattaur and Tagenarine Chanderpaul on the final day of their three-day GTM Inter-County match against Essequibo almost cost them an outright victory in the first round. Needing 56 runs from 35 overs to win in the final session on the third day hit by rain, the rather experienced pair batted as if they needed to save their places on the team while the  skies threatened to end play.

The unconcerned facial expressions of the two during the interruption looked as if they had their own game plan to stick with – no urgency.

However, Ricardo Adams, the Essequibo captain was more than happy to play along and find ways of delaying the game  with the rain approaching.

The good fortunes of the Demerara supporters that actually wanted the team to win were happy to see rain stop just around  17.00hrs

The pair continued and eventually reached 60 without loss in 18.2 overs as Chanderpaul finished with 33 and Sattaur finished on 27. Sattaur was eventually named man-of-the-match for his maiden century in the first innings.

Earlier in the day, Demerara resumed from their overnight score of 174 – 2 but crumbled to 209 all out in 69.4 overs to gain a lead of 112 runs.

Herry Greene was the pick of the bowlers for Essequibo with 6 – 68 from 24.4 overs while Rajiv Balgobin and Kesho Rooplall picked up a wicket each.

Essequibo then batted and got to 167 before being bowled out and gaining a lead of 55 just before the tea interval. They batted for 48.1 overs in which Ricardo Peters top scored with 65 and received support from Balgobin who made 45.

Shivram Persaud bagged 5 – 15 while Dexter George snatched 4 – 26.
