Hearts of Oak Masters reviving female football in Berbice

FOLLOWING the competitiveness that was recently demonstrated at the Guyana Teachers Union Female Inter-primary football competition in New Amsterdam, the Hearts of Oak Masters Football Club has sought to arrest that talent by immediately launching a female training programme at the Scott’s School ground.

altIn an exclusive interview with Chronicle Sport, secretary of the club and football coach, Kenrick Bowry, said that his club is  training females in all aspects of the game to create more competition among schools.
“After the last competition, we realised that a lot of females are interested in football and we would not allow this sort of talent to slip by. We want to give them an opportunity to develop their game,” he added.
Last Wednesday, almost a score of females turned up for training sessions and many more have expressed the willingness to participate at the conclusion of term exams.
Bowry indicated that a year-round training programme has been drafted for the participants who will train from Monday to Wednesday between 15:30hrs and 17:00hrs outside of holidays and football events at the ground.
“For too long, female football has been forgotten at the local level and we see this as an opportunity to revive the game among the girls and, allow them to participate in competitions to showcase their talent,” Bowry declared.
In addition, they have been drafted into the annual ‘Teach Them Young’ summer training programme, which is sanctioned by the Berbice Football Association. This year the programme will run from July 15 to August 16, Monday to Friday, at 09:00hrs daily.
“In addition to actual football training, we will have qualified personnel join us to conduct sessions on etiquette, importance of academics and other areas that will contribute to developing well-rounded footballers,” the coach stressed.
Bowry remains optimistic that parents and guardians will see the benefits of the training sessions and come out and take note of the performance of their children.
