Edghill visits relatives of Bosai’s accident victims

GOVERNMENT has extended its sympathy to the bereaved families of the three Bosai workers who were killed in an accident on Thursday at the bauxite company’s East Montgomery Mine site, Region 10. On Friday, Minister within the Ministry of Finance Juan Edghill visited the grief stricken families and expressed condolences on behalf of the government.
The three men, vehicle driver 43-year-old Michael Williams, mechanic 62-year-old Trenton Garner and 20-year-old Kester Grant, were crushed after the pick-up truck they were travelling in, skidded under a heavy-duty truck, which drove over the vehicle as they traversed the company’s internal road at the mine site.
Two other workers, Marlon Pollydore and Fabian Anthony, survived the accident and are hospitalised in the Intensive Care Unit of the Linden Hospital.
Minister Edghill first reached out to the relatives of the late Williams of Coomacka Mines, including his widow and five children, and offered words of comfort.
He added that the accident was, “sudden and untimely” and appealed for understanding amongst all of those affected at this time.
“We are still trying to grapple with all that is happening so we hope you would find the strength to cope and manage this. I’m sure we’ll be able to look at lessons learned, nobody is ever prepared to accept death especially when it comes by way of accident,” he told the mother of the late Kester Grant at their lot Block 22, Wismar Housing Scheme residence.
At Lot 12, Industrial area, he met with the family of the late Garner and also offered government’s condolences.
Minister Edghill also visited the accident scene for a firsthand look at the remains of the crushed pick-up truck and expressed his shock over what happened.
In addition, he met with Bosai’s management officials who pledged to do all that is possible to ensure the well-being of the two survivors, stressing that they were in constant contact with the medical staff treating them.
The company’s officials promised to expedite further medical treatment if needed and this was relayed to the two survivors, whom the minister met in the hospital’s ICU. The company also gave its commitment to pay for the funerals of the deceased and offered financial assistance to their families.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment has launched an investigation into the deadly accident and will also examine occupational health and safety practices at Bosai’s operations. (GINA)
