THE National Ophthalmology Hospital at Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice, remains fully functional and delivers a high standard of service, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo boasted recently.
He told the Guyana Chronicle that the facility, which falls under the ambit of the Ministry of Health, is well staffed and operates with the support of the Berbice Regional Health Authority (BRHA).
Mahadeo said that very soon the institution will be starting a village by village campaign in an effort to locate people who have developed cataracts.
“We were expected to start this campaign already but, very soon, we are going to mobilise. Part of the campaign includes the 60 seconds screening of diabetic patients to determine if they are developing or have developed cataract,” he explained.
The CEO pointed out, though, that for the hospital
to continue being fully operational, cataract surgeries must be done regularly since that is the purpose for which it was established.
Mahadeo maintained that the well trained supporting staff and doctors there are renowned for their high quality of service, which has attracted many people outside of Guyana.
“I would say that the hospital has the best patient care that you can find in any developed country. People from the Caribbean islands and other countries go there for services that speak volumes,” he insisted.
Its establishment was with the primary objective of providing quality eye care through its staff and persons who are developing problems with their sight are asked to make use of the services offered there, Mahadeo stated.
