A MISUNDERSTANDING that led to a snag in the New Amsterdam drainage programme earlier this week has been resolved, according to Acting New Amsterdam Town Clerk, Mrs. Sharon Alexander.
Speaking to the Guyana Chronicle yesterday, Alexander stated that a meeting involving the drainage supervisor, Sewdat Singh, sluice attendant, Prabhudyal and some drainage and irrigation workers was held in her office on Wednesday, when she explained to all parties that clearing of the main drainage canals in the township is vital at the moment, since the May/June rains are here.
“The M&TC spent millions of dollars last November under the 2012 subvention to clear and desilt the main canals, and we are not in a strong financial position at the moment to expend such large sums of money; so it is important that our drainage workers do routine maintenance to clear vegetation from the canals,” she explained.
Alexander pointed out that the Regional Democratic Council of Region 6 is working assiduously with the M&TC to ensure that there is proper drainage in the township, which is why the drainage and irrigation work programme is drafted collectively.
She also told this publication that in addition to the ongoing drainage programme, the M&TC has solicited the services of inmates of the New Amsterdam Prison in clearing a few main drains in south New Amsterdam, and the exercise is going well.
