UGSS president repays $800,000 used for personal expenses

PRESIDENT of the University of Guyana Students Society (UGSS), Ganesh Mahipaul has repaid the $800,000 which he allegedly misappropriated from the student body’s account to meet his personal expenses.

altThis was disclosed to the Guyana Chronicle, yesterday, in a telephone interview with a reliable source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Mahipaul was required to repay the monies that he borrowed by May 31, and in an interview with this publication he had assured that it was his full intention from the onset to make full repayment.
Students of the university had claimed that the UGSS president misappropriated the monies, and they were calling on him to resign.
However, Mahipaul had declared that he was not guilty of misappropriation of the student body’s monies, but had borrowed the monies under the correct procedure, and several members were aware of this.
The UGSS president is currently on administrative leave to facilitate an internal audit, which he had said he welcomes, since he is confident that he will be found innocent of the allegations against him.
Mahipaul had said that the allegations against him are unfortunate since they have taken a toll on his character, with his integrity being put into question, leaving him with no other choice than to say that he is not desirous of remaining in the position as president of the UGSS.
Senior Vice President of the UGSS, Mahendra Doraisami and Public Relations Officer Amir Dillawar have since resigned, and Mahipaul had stated that he will make his final decision after the internal audit has been completed.
UG Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jacob Opadeyi had said that they have also decided not to release any money to the UGSS until they have accounted for the money  they received in recent times.
