MURDER accused Rudolph Williams who according to prosecution witnesses stabbed Naomi Singh to death in 2009 is now alleging “I was beaten to confess.”
According to prosecution witnesses, the alleged confession about the killing of the woman was declared by the judge to be freely and voluntarily given to the police during the holding of a voir dire (a trial within a trial).
But during the substantive trial, the accused through his counsel Mr. George Thomas is putting to witnesses through cross-examination that the police had placed a black bag over the head of the accused and beaten him with a spring under his feet, as one of the means of terror and violence to obtain the confession.
Policemen named as taking part in the torture incident include Detective Sgt. Germaine David, Detective Corporal Cranston Fraser and Police Officer Paul.
Several suggestions highlighting police brutality were met with definite denials by the different witnesses who claimed that they never took part in the alleged confrontation.
In her opening address to the jury the leading prosecutor Miss Natasha Backer in association with Miss Dhanika Singh told Judge Brassington Reynolds and the mixed jury that at the time of her death Naomi was only 20 years old, and lived with her parents and siblings.
They last saw her alive some time on the 1st of May, 2009, and sometime later on that date she was found dead with a slit throat.
Three days later a post-mortem examination was performed on the body which revealed that she had died from shock and hemorrhage due to an incised wound to her neck.
The prosecutor asked the question – “so how did Naomi Singh receive that incised wound to her neck? Was it the accused Rudolph Williams who inflicted it? – that members of the jury is what you have to determine.”
The prosecutor told the jury that if at the end of the day they found that this accused did not murder Naomi Singh, they would have to return a verdict of not guilty and send him home.
However, if at the end of the day, after hearing all the evidence, you are left beyond a reasonable doubt that this man murdered Naomi Singh, you must return a verdict of guilty.
