RECENTLY, residents of Station Street, Kitty, have been voicing their disgust at the noise nuisance as a result of the proliferation of several rum shops and liquor restaurants. Residents have to put up with loud music from vehicles parked in front of homes. There is total disregard for the aged and students.
Patrons park their vehicles in such a manner that they block entrances to properties. They urinate in public view wherever they choose. Another thing we have to tolerate is the excessive use of vehicular horns.
Special platforms and seats are built on the parapets and pavements so that the consumption of alcohol and malt is done in public view. One individual now has a pools table on the pavement in front of his spot which is open till 4 AM.
Some shops sell beer and malts which are consumed on the premises, even as children and females visit these shops to purchase grocery and confectionaries. They have to walk between the persons consuming alcohol to make their purchase.
The police do not help. One owner of a rum shop is a former senior police officer who now works with the Police Complaints Authority. In other cases we do not know why the police do not act on complaints.
Perhaps nobody can do anything because the patrons to these shops are the children of rich families who must show off with their new female friends.
