National Guinness Greatest of the Street …Back Circle one step closer to redemption… secure National title with force

THE continued domination by the force that is ‘Back Circle’ leaves one only to say that the team has proved that they are arguably the best street football team throughout Guyana.

This comes on the heels of their most recent tournament win at the National level of the Guinness Greatest of the Street Football Challenge which culminated on Monday night at the Banks DIH Parking Lot.
They, the Regional runners-up, now have a chance to redeem themselves next month in St Vincent following that disappointing loss in the Regional final last year at the National Park Tarmac.
Back Circle were impressive over the three days of intense rivalry, losing only one match in the preliminary round, but bounced back in the knockout round to easily secure a spot in the final.
On a wet Monday night, torrential rainfall did not dampen the spirit of the supporters from Linden, Georgetown, East Coast and more so those that have the passion for football. The heavy rainfall settled in around the time of the third-place playoff.
Earlier in the night, Back Circle defeated Victoria Church Yard 3-0 on penalty kicks after battling to 1-1 deadlock. Victoria drew first blood in the 30th minute through an Andrew Holder strike but the Georgetown champions answered right back in the 32nd minute compliments of Devon Harris.
That Back Circle victory pushed them into the final where they awaited the victors of the Silver Bullets/Plaisance match, which was won by the latter.
Plaisance stormed through the next round with a 3-0 win over the opposition as Warren Gilkes (16th), Teyon Esmond (20th) and Prince Johnson (23rd) accounted for the goals.
During the break before the third-place match and final, two exhibition matches were contested as the Media defeated Oasis Taxi Service 1-0 in the first then Guinness Bar defeated Banks DIH 2-1 on sudden death penalty kicks.
In the third-place showdown, Silver Bullets drew first blood as early as the sixth minute when Nigel Bennette scored but Victoria found the equaliser three minutes into the second half to hold the game in the balance until extra time.
Neither team grabbed the upper hand which sent the match into penalty kicks where Silver Bullets won 3-2.
Finally, Back Circle got a shot at the title and took it home in fine style, steamrolling Plaisance 4-1 when they got going.
From the whistle, Back Circle’s attack commenced and they went ahead thanks to Andy Duke who scored in the fourth minute. Duke’s performances are to be commended. The short stocky player plays with great urgency and his tactical awareness is impeccable at this level – Back Circle’s Most Valuable Player hands down.
Goals in the 19th minute from Vincent Thomas and 20th minute by Harris drew the victory closer. In the second half, Kester Green pulled one back for Plaisance in the 22nd minute but Harris completed a brace in the 25th minute to make it a three-possession game once more, taking the  fight out of the opposition in the process.
