Corlette admits flooding but denies EDWC breached

CHAIRMAN of Region 4(Demerara/Mahaica), Mr Clement Corlette has dismissed rumours that the East Demerara Water Conservancy (EDWC) has been breached.

Speaking to the Guyana Chronicle, by telephone yesterday, he said he is not aware of any such damage but minor floods in the Region have been caused by constant rainfall.
Corlette added that neither was he informed of anything like that by the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) nor reported to the public by his officers as persons are claiming.
The Chairman noted that the most recent flooding resulting from heavy rains affected the Buxton area which he, himself, visited, with some other officials and inspected the drainage pump.
Corlette said the villagers expressed their concern that the almost four inches of water that had accumulated would increase as the rain continued.
He acknowledged that, when he went to inspect it, part of the pump seemed to have been slightly damaged but that was rectified on the spot, the same day when the rain eased.
Corlette said the surrounding areas also experienced minor floods but the rainfall water receded soon and he cannot understand why persons would say that there was a breach at the EDWC.
He emphasised that, if the important facility had, indeed, been damaged, water would have been far more than four inches high and taken way longer to recede.
