Guyanese must work to protect what they have -Local Gov’t Minister at Region 1 Flag Raising ceremony

MINISTER of Local Government and Regional Development, Ganga Persaud, said that the achievements that Guyana, as a nation, has accomplished over the past 47 years are the direct result of the contributions of every Guyanese citizen, regardless of race, religion, political affiliation, or geographic location.

altThe minister was at the time delivering the feature address at the flag-raising ceremony at Port Kaituma, Region 1 on May 25.
He said that inspite of the challenges that Guyana continues to face, one undisputed fact remains, that the country has experienced significant growth and development since it became independent in 1966, but moreso, since the PPP/C took office in 1992.
“Together we can fashion this land of ours to bring greater joy, happiness and comfort to lives of each citizen. The PPP/C Government stands ready, under the leadership of President Donald Ramotar, to work with every Guyanese in every community across the country to ensure that the country’s continued growth and development is taken seriously, so that all of our dreams can be realised,” Minister Persaud said.
Over the past few years, major regional celebrations such as independence have always been held in the Mabaruma sub-district; however, this year, the regional administration organised the celebration of Guyana’s 47th Independence anniversary celebration to be held at Port Kaituma.
Minister Persaud said he was pleased with this move, since Region 1 extends far beyond the Mabaruma sub-district. He expressed the hope that the regional administration will continue to decentralise celebrations of this nature, taking them closer to residents of other communities in the region.
“What Guyana has achieved over the past 47 years has taken many countries much longer, while many others are still trying to achieve what we have. There is still a long road ahead, but if we work assiduously to protect our gains, then we will move forward at a rapid pace,” he said.
Referring to public infrastructure in the region, he said it is the duty of residents, as responsible citizens, to protect the investments that have been made through taxpayers’ dollars.
Following the minister’s speech, the Golden Arrowhead was hoisted by ranks of the armed forces stationed in the region. Residents were also treated to cultural presentations put together by youths in the community.
