Craig Village man on break and enter charge blames being ‘high’

A MAN from Craig Village on the East Bank of Demerara who appeared before Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Friday on a break and enter charge claimed that he was high and didn’t know what he was doing. “I don’t know if I was there,” he said.

Subsequently Edwards was refused bail and the matter was transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court to be continued on May 29.
It is alleged that on May 22 Elroy Edwards, 20, who resides in Craig, East Bank Demerara, unlawfully broke into Carol Joseph’s house in an attempt to commit a felony.
According to prosecutor Ramsahoye Rambajue, Edwards who resides in the same area as Joseph, went into the woman’s yard at 18:30 hrs and was chased out when she saw him. Again, later that night at 20:30 hrs Joseph was awakened by a noise in her house and when she checked her children’s room she saw Edwards with his hands on her eight-year-old daughter’s waist. She raised an alarm and the defendant fled. The matter was reported and subsequently Edwards was arrested.
The Chief Magistrate then asked Edwards if he accepted the allegations against him and he said: “I was high and didn’t know what I was doing. I don’t know if I was there.”
Edwards told the court that he did not have any pending matters. However, the prosecutor objected to bail, citing the nature of the offence and the penalty it attracts if the defendant is found guilty. The accused was then remanded to prison until May 29 when the matter will come up at the Providence Magistrate’s Court. (Jeanna Pearson)
