Monte Lynch’s appointment an innovative move

THE appointment of the disciplinarian and perfectly fit Monte Lynch as Territorial Developmental Officer at the Guyana Cricket Board is certainly an interesting and innovative move. Lynch is a qualified Level Three English Trained Coach.  Lynch played county cricket in England for approximately two decades. He was an exciting attacking batsman, a utility player who was a useful off-spinner and magnificent man in the field.
Lynch was not a great Test cricketer but he certainly played international cricket and was highly competitive.  He will bring to the very young cricketers a wealth of experience. As a batting coach he will ensure the young players develop excellent batting techniques. However, it will be a challenge and he must ensure that Guyana produces some of the best fielders in the world as was evident in former years.
The Guyana National Stadium has the best ground facility where our players could enjoy fielding practice.
Our groundsmen will be only too happy to keep the ground in the appropriate conditions to give the young cricketers an opportunity to learn the art of chasing and making superb saves.
Our very young cricketers must be exposed to the best fielding and batting techniques.
Today, the world is producing genuine all-rounders. All bowlers must be able to bat.  wicketkeepers must be very good batsmen.  However, cricket is a real professional game. Hence, the players must appreciate that in a team sport they must learn to play for the team.
Lynch is capable of imparting the real knowledge playing in all three versions of the game.
Our young cricketers must be physically fit and have very good knowledge of the game.  They must learn to focus on batting, bowling and fielding. Cricketers must develop an alert mind. They must understand and appreciate how to live with ‘peer pressure’.  They must know how to socialise and live in groups of various compositions.
Lynch is a wonderful person who needs all the support and with his experience and genuine willingness to work with the young cricketers he will certainly enable Guyana to produce some world-class cricketers in the very near future.
Lynch’s job description entails the establishment of a secondary school cricket programme, supervising the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB)/GCB Digicel grassroots cricket and revamping of the Guyana Cricket Board Coaching and Cricket Development Programmes.
Lynch should try and bring as much cricket coaches around the country under one umbrella. This will enable our coaches to work with a well-organsied developmental programme. The school cricket programme will allow brilliant students to appreciate the value of cricket. The medical doctor, Daniel Vettori who played Test cricket and captained New Zealand along with many brilliant university graduates who played Test cricket must be enough source of inspiration to our youths.
The Coaching programme must be broadened to include all our cricket coaches.  The young cricketers need this strong support.
The time is opportune when the top schools in Guyana must produce world-class sportsmen and sportswomen.
Let us give our unflinching support to Monte Lynch!
