Mayor of Georgetown Hamilton Green, yesterday, took media operatives on a city tour, pointing out various sites where more focus needs to be placed for the Georgetown restoration project. He said that the tour was aimed at assisting the general public, through the media, to understand the magnitude of the situation facing the government and the Mayor and City Council.
He noted that Georgetown is a very complex place with many complicated standpoints, and what is involved in its restoration process needs to be looked at from a bigger perspective.
He said, also, that one must bear in mind that although this project is about to begin, it will not be a task that will be completed in a matter of a few months, but rather one which may stretch a few years.
Meanwhile, Green lauded the Private Sector for the support and contribution that they have been giving the restoration project.
He said further, that geographic sectors of the city need to be taken into consideration, for example, the Meadowbank area, noting that the Ministry of Local Government and the private sector must embrace this fact and look at all the different angles.
He also pointed out that persons in the city continue to make mistakes, which are very unhealthy for the city as well as making it difficult for the restoration project.
He said that this rather massive restoration project needs to be understood and carefully attempted, as mistakes in the city have been committed a while back, such as filling up major canals in the city.
No Parking Facilities
He said another issue in the restoration of the city is that business entities are constructing humongous buildings such as malls and plazas but are providing no parking facilities for their staff and customers. He said that has contributed to the congestion of traffic in the city, making it difficult for everyone.
He added that with no parking and less space, the road rage will increase on a daily basis and someone needs to wake up and face the fact that as a result of no parking in Georgetown, a strategic plan is needed for businesses to understand that they need to provide parking and convenient facilities to keep the city congestion free.
The mayor said that when persons hear about the “restoration of Georgetown Project” they automatically think of garbage removal, but the restoration does not involve just the removal of garbage although it is a very important concern. The entire project entails the restructuring of the city’s whole geographical infrastructure and concept, he declared.
