A MAN was, yesterday, fined for illegal entry into Guyana but remanded to prison on a charge of illegal possession of ammunition.
Angel Daniels, 30, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry and, through an interpreter, pleaded not guilty to one offence which said, on Thursday, March 21, at Fairfield, Essequibo Coast, he had seven shotgun cartridges without being the holder of a firearm licence. The defendant (no address given) admitted that, on the same day, at Charity, on Essequibo Coast, too, he entered Guyana by sea from Venezuela and failed to present himself to an immigration officer.
Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick told the Court that the defendant resides with his sister at a rice mill at Aurora, another part of Essequibo Coast and, that day, ranks were at a checkpoint conducting searches.
Daniels was a passenger in motor car HB 1210 and a search of his bag yielded the ammunition. He claimed that a person known as ‘Trini’ gave him but the man denied any knowledge of it, said the prosecutor who, successfully, objected to bail for Daniels, stating that he has no fixed place of abode and is not likely to return for trial, as well, as no special reason was advanced for the grant.
For illegally entering Guyana, Daniels was fined $30,000 with an alternative of six months imprisonment and the illegal possession of ammunition charge was transferred to Suddie Court, Essequibo Coast, for May 16, until then the defendant remains on remand.(Geeta Rampersaud)
