THE Guyana Police Service (GPS) has recorded 37 fatalities from 34 accidents for period January 01 to April 30, 2013, compared to 28 fatalities from 27 accidents during the corresponding period in 2012. However, incidents categorized as serious, minor and damage accidents have all shown reductions, so far.
For the period under review, eight motor cyclists have lost their lives; seven pedestrians; seven pedal cyclists; six drivers, and five passengers of motor vehicles have each suffered a similar fate.
Speeding continues to be a major contributing factor to fatal accidents, accounting for 26 of the 34 fatal accidents recorded as at the end of April 2013.
Police traffic enforcement during the period January to April 2013 resulted in a total of 29,047 cases being made against errant motorists, of which 7,689 cases were for speeding.
Four fatalities resulting from four road accidents have been recorded so far for the month of May 2013.
