THE Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, yesterday, handed over a brand new garbage truck and two matching compactors, to the Georgetown City Council.
The presentation was done at Muneshwar’s Wharf, in Water Street, where Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Norman Whittaker; Mayor of Georgetown, Hamilton Green and Acting City Engineer Lloyd Allen were among those present.
Minister Whittaker explained that the vehicle and machines were purchased with funds through the 2012 subvention from the ministry and the total cost is $34M.
He said the intention is for the gifted machinery to be placed at Bourda and Stabroek markets to collect garbage from vendors and keep the surroundings clean.
Mayor Green said, with the new acquisition, the Council is hoping it will reduce the garbage piles that vendors create around the markets.
He thanked the Local Government Ministry for its contribution and intervention that has assisted with the Council’s workload.
Whittaker emphasised the need to take total care of the equipment so as to ensure they last a long time and help keep parts of Georgetown clean.
He also stated that it is in an effort to aid the Restoration of Georgetown Project, which will benefit the Guyanese nation and restore the Garden City.
