Charred remains of husband and wife found in gutted house

THE police are continuing their investigations into the discovery of the charred remains of businessman Totaram Mootoo, 54, and his wife Basmattie, 48, who were found in their bed by fire fighters who responded to a call at the couple’s Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara home.

The Guyana Chronicle has been informed that the police are questioning several persons in connection with the incident.
One man who said claimed to be a friend of the businessman for the past 20 years, told the media that he was at a nearby bar with some friends having a drink when he heard what sounded like gunshots. Then there was a loud explosion.alt
He said that immediately after the explosion he noticed smoke coming from his friend’s home, and by the time he rushed over to it, the building was engulfed in flames.

The man said that at the time he was not sure if the couple was at home so he immediately rushed to get the vehicles out of the couple’s compound. Following that he attempted to get into the house to see what he could save, but the thick smoke kept him altback.
Fire tenders arrived and saved the building from being completely destroyed.
Yesterday relatives of the couple gathered at the burnt-out house. They said that they are not sure of the couple having any issues with anyone and called for the police to ensure that they get to the bottom of the matter.
