Mixed fortunes for Caribbean at CONCACAF beach soccer

NASSAU, Bahamas (CMC) – Caribbean countries experienced mixed fortunes at the CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championships at the Malcolm Park Beach Soccer and Futsal Facility in Nassau, Bahamas, Thursday night.

Jamaica were eliminated after losing on penalty kicks to Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago crashed to a 9-1 defeat in their opening match against defending champions Mexico, and hosts Bahamas scored a dramatic 4-3 win over Guatemala to move to the top of their zone.
Nesley Jean’s goal with a little more than a minute left on the clock was the crucial extender that boosted the Bahamas over Guatemala in a game that saw the score knotted on three occasions.
The victory elevated the tournament hosts into first place in Group A on goal difference over the United States, both on six points.
They squared-off yesterday in a top-of-the-table clash to determine the group winner.
A change in schedule saw T&T play Mexico in their first match of the tournament, a qualifying competition for this year’s FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.
Mexico’s big victory over Trinidad followed their 10-nil drubbing of Canada whom T&T played yesterday.
Costa Rica, meantime, earned two points after overcoming Jamaica 2-1 on penalty kicks, following a 3-3 draw in regulation.
The Jamaicans had lost their opening match of three-team Group C 7-2 to El Salvador.
