VICE Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Professor Jacob Opadeyi, has disclosed that an internal audit is currently being conducted on the accounts of the university’s Students Society in light of recent accusations levelled against UGSS President Ganesh Mahipaul. Speaking to The Chronicle, on Tuesday, Professor Opadeyi said UG’s management has also decided not to release any money to the University of Guyana Student Society (UGSS) until that body has accounted for the money that it had received in recent times.
Pointing out that the UGSS is a self-governing body, the professor said when the audit is completed, a way forward will be decided on.
Reports erupted in the media last week which detailed that students were claiming Mahipaul had misappropriated some $800,000 of the student body’s money to meet his personal expenses, and students were calling on him to resign. However, Mahipaul had said that this money was not misappropriated, but was borrowed under the correct process as fixed by the governing body of the society, and several members were aware that he was borrowing the money. Mahipaul is expected to host a press conference today to address the issue. (Chriseana Ramrekha)
