GCA appeals for consumer, humanitarian approach to GPL and Specialty Hospital

WE hesitated for some time to make this appeal, since in our present-day milieu any such appeal is often facilely labelled ‘political’ and the Constitution of our Association absolutely forbids the involvement of the Association in political matters. After much soul-searching, we know our appeal is purely in the interest of consumers.
We would humbly like to appeal to our

leaders and representatives in Parliament (the Legislature) and the Executive to approach the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) and the Specialty Hospital issues from primarily a consumer and humanitarian perspective, ensuring that the GPL is sufficiently funded to carry out its work as a public utility during the year and that the Specialty Hospital be made to speedily materialise.
The funding of both projects will bring great relief and comfort to consumers and the general population of Guyana. If the GPL does not function with required resources, this would result in extended and regular blackouts affecting hospitals, sick rooms at home, children and students’ studies, the old and the sick, and cause industry and commerce to be disturbed and less productive, resulting in the laying off of workers. And higher rates would inevitably have to be imposed on the hard-pressed consumer.
In Guyana, it is imperative that we constantly strive to improve and modernise our health services. Because of the absence of varied specialist services, many sick persons cannot be properly diagnosed or treated and will be afflicted with quicker and avoidable demise. Some surgical operations and treatments are  available only abroad and only the wealthy could afford them, while the vast majority of sufferers must await their avoidable demise. The Specialty Hospital would go a long way in meeting this need.
We would importune our leaders and representatives to view the GPL and Specialty Hospital issues through consumer lenses and to eschew other considerations, making available the required funding for the GPL and Specialty Hospital. Consumers and the general population of Guyana would be deeply grateful and appreciative to our leaders and representatives for such a gesture; and we humbly urge that this be done speedily so as to assuage the anxiety, fears and pessimism which have overtaken a large part of the population.
