CAPITOL News and other media operatives, including Glen Lall, have filed constitutional motions seeking to have the Court quash certain radio and television licences that were issued by former President Bharrat Jagdeo shortly before he demitted office.
The applicants are asking, firstly, for:
* an order or rule nisi of certiorari, directed to the Attorney General to show cause why writs should not be issued to bring up and quash the decisions made by the then Head of State in November 2011, to grant radio and television licences to Radio Guyana Inc., Telecor and Cultural Broadcasting Inc., New Guyana Company Ltd., Rudolph Grant; NTN Radio; Wireless Connections; Hits and Jams Entertainment; Alfro Alphonso & Sons Enterprise; Haslyn Graham and Little Rock Television Station, on the ground that they were made notwithstanding a Broadcasting Authority had been established by Section 3 of the Broadcasting Act 2011, and
* secondly, an order or rule nisi directed to Valmikki Singh, Managing Director of the National Frequency Management Unit (NFMU), to show cause why writs or orders of certiorari should not be issued to bring up and quash decisions to assign frequencies for radio and television broadcasting to the persons named.
Applicant Enrico Woolford said in his supporting affidavit that he has filed the motion on his own behalf and that of all the citizens of Guyana.
The legal line-up includes Senior Counsels Rex Mc Kay and Keith Massiah and other attorneys-at-law Mr. Neil Boston, Mr. Fitz Peters, Mrs. Abiola Wong-Inniss, Mrs. Bettina Glasford and Mr. Christopher Ram.
A date for hearing is to be fixed.
