THERE seems to be no valid reason for the Opposition to deny funds for the specialty hospital, airport expansion or Amaila Falls projects at this stage of development after having a chance to question government officials about their various concerns.
There are contractual agreements and works in progress in varying degrees on these projects that demand a much more prudent approach by the Opposition than the slash-and-burn approach being employed.
Surely, the reason cannot be as was suggested that it is because of the ill feelings felt towards Mr. Jagdeo. It is not who suggested them but who will benefit from them that counts. The Opposition continues to complain about not having all the facts, while ignoring them when they are given.
A specialty hospital by definition is for special medical treatment not available in Guyana and will attract overseas patients for treatment at a very competitive rate. Medical Tourism is a very lucrative business that could earn hard currency for Guyana, and help bring improved medical practices, employment and customers to the new Marriott and modern airport.
Hydro-power will help Georgetown and other parts enjoy lower electricity rates like Linden. There are many spin-offs that could come in employment from these projects. Perhaps, it is time for the people to decide whether parliament should continue as present or call for new elections to decide whether we continue with this parliamentary stalemate or move forward in making the best use of our time and resources.
