GT&T Jingle and Song Competition quarterfinal rocks NCC

THE action at the National Cultural Centre on Thursday last was electrifying as the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) launched the quarterfinal leg of this year’s Jingle and Song Competition. And patrons certainly had their musical desires satisfied as the thirty-two contestants battled fiercely to secure a spot in the upcoming semi-final leg.
From these thirty-two, a lucky fifteen will be shortlisted for the semi-final segment. However, while the judges’ scores mattered last Thursday night, the public votes for each contestant will be critical in   determining whether they are sent home or remain in the competition.
First to take the stage was the somewhat timid Teeanna Austin to perform ‘Brown Eyes’ by Beyonce. She started the song quite well but had a few problems with the high notes. However, she was adjudged a safe performer by the judges. To keep her singing, fans must text E1 to 620 8683.
Nichole Osborne some felt did not have the correct vocals for the song, ‘How could an angel break my heart”. But if that was so she certainly made up for it with her emotional and theatrical display, so if you want her to remain in the contest, text E2 to 620 8683.
Darren Benjamin was a very confident contender as he belted out ‘Simply Amazing’ by Trey Song, but as the judges decided, he had a few difficulties with his notes, and his line endings certainly were not perfect. This lad can remain if you text E3 to 620 8683.
Aaliyah Roshewel is normally a talented singer, but the gods somehow did not smile on her that night as she went shockingly off key throughout her presentation of Celine Dion’s ‘Because you loved me’. She was very emotional and wept. Later she revealed she was very nervous and ‘missed the beat’ as she presented her act. However, fans can keep her in this event by texting E4 to 620 8683.
Tataum Grenville was indeed a sexy siren as she lustrously stormed the high notes and pitches singing Beyonce’s ‘Smash into you’. This girl was certainly a crowd pleaser. This diva wants fans to text E5 to 620 8683.
Lerone Souvenir was not too bad and was dubbed a good performer by the judges. This contestant requires tons of texts to E6 to 620 8683.
Ominelle Orne certainly could have done better when she presented Toni Braxton’s ‘Un-break My Heart’. The magic potion to keep her singing is E7 to 620 8683.
The competition certainly heated up when Dorian Obermuller took to the stage belting out with gusto, Stevie Wonder’s ‘Overjoyed’. He certainly had the crowd screaming their approval. To keep Dorian singing his way to victory, you must text E8 to 620 8683.
Teenage Berbician, Michael Small certainly shone for the ancient county, making quick work of Mariah Carey’s, ‘There’s a hero’. And of course all Berbice should text E9 to 620 8683 if they want him driving the car to his hometown.
Representing the Essequibo is calypsonian, Edward Perez, who did what the judges called a safe presentation when he performed: ‘How do I breathe’ by Mario. Though he made no mistake and possesses a very melodious voice, he must bring his ‘woo factor’ to stay in the competition. To keep him there, his fans will have to text E10 to 620 8683.
Another smooth performer was Tuchenie George who sang with all her heart, ‘If this isn’t love’ by Jennifer Hudson. She was sultry and mesmerizing and earned herself good comments from the judges. And her magic number is E11.

Ryan Hoppie was all fire and brimstone as he rained a vocal thunderstorm with deep emotion and passion on the arena. He hit the notes correctly but of course the experienced Charmaine Blackman reminded him about his ‘line endings’. To be successful in the next round his fans will have to utilize the number E12 for texting.

Another Essequibian, T’Shanna Cort was very impressive in executing Christina Aguilera’s ‘Beautiful’. She certainly had an enticing attitude, but the audience grew alarmed that she was going to ‘shake her head off’ as  part of her theatrics. In doing that she missed beats in her song and certainly avoided a high note. Nonetheless, to keep her singing, Essequibo will have to text E13 to 620 8683.

Latoni Beaton did not seem ready for love when she brought to the stage, India Arie’s ‘Ready for Love’, thus leaving her act a little lacking. To keep her singing, supporters will have to do lots of texting with her number E14.

Sonia Barrow brought liquid magic to the stage as she created honey filled bubbles with her voice, and took  to  heights of creativity as she unleashed real ‘vocal magic’. She performed Alicia Keys, ‘No One’. Her number to remain in the competition is E15.

Renata Bailey will certainly have to upgrade since her presentation of Brandy’s ‘Have you ever’ certainly was a cake that needed some more toppings. Her magic number is  E16.

For a seasoned campaigner, Nickeshia Alexander should know better than to treat her presentation as a simple walk in the park. Her vocals were excellent, but the somewhat lackluster presentation of Beyonce’s ‘Honesty’ must have left her fans wondering. She just did not pick a song that can do wonders for her rich vocals. Her magic number is E17.

Pure heaven rained down on the National Cultural Centre when Natasha Yapp sang Alicia Key’s ‘Superwoman’. The song was certainly in keeping with her intense performance as she attacked the high notes and pitches without fear. She of course received a standing ovation from the audience and a few judges. She left the stage beaming to thunderous applause. Her winning number is E18.

Karissa Couchman was a pretty little bundle of talent and did good work with Ne-Yo’s ‘Mad’. With little reprimanding she received altogether good remarks from the judges. To keep her singing her fans will have to text E19 to 620 8683.
Linden’s Diana Chapman picked a song that matched her vocals and presented a beautiful rendition of  Beyonce’s ‘I was Here’. She made no mistakes and certainly hit the high notes well as affirmed by most of the judges. Her number to ensure she stays in the competition is E20.
Neil Maraj was a pleasant surprise to all. His voice climbed from soothing to stirring and then rose into high ledges of very provocative undertones. He performed ‘Crawl’ by Chris Brown and was well received by the audience. To keep his charisma flowing, his supporters will have to text his E21 to 620 8683.
Coming out of Linden, Jermaine Mc Bean’s performance can be dubbed as ‘cool and impressive’, and he was smart enough to target the ladies who readily responded when he performed R. Kelly’s ‘When a woman’s fed up.’ Text E22 to keep him in the competition.
Karen Couchman was dubbed a good performer as she sang Amy Winehouse’s ‘Stronger than Me’. Her number is E23. She was followed by Dale Vanbrook who sang ‘Mam’ by Chris Brown in honour of his deceased mother. He presented well but according to judge Shaun Bhola he would have do more to take him through the next two rounds of the competition. His victory number is E24.
Sherbeth Hinds brought fire to the stage again and she  placed her heart and soul into Whitney Houston’s ‘One Moment In Time’. She attacked the notes and held on to the high pitches. She left the stage amidst loud applause from the audience and beaming smiles from the judges. To give her that car that is up for grabs, fans will have to text her winning number E25.
Shellon Gallay is indeed a powerful singer but her song choice of Adele’s ‘Hometown glory’ certainly did not do her justice, and this was affirmed by the judges. To keep her singing, her fans will have to perform miracles by texting her number E26.
Michael Spencer’s presentation of ‘I believe in you’ by Nsync was called a safe act but as the judges said, it certainly lacked the wow factor. But we know the entire Victoria Village will be texting E27 over and over again to keep him in the competition.
The Buxton diva Ernesta Nelson took her vocals to the edge of insanity as she did her best to impress with ‘Rihanna’s ‘Russian Roulette’. And of course it paid off well, coupled with her emotional theatrics. To take her to the top Buxton will have to keep texting E28 to 620 8683.
Jo-Anna Tracey is a very talented singer and she proved that when she belted out Beyonce’s ‘Halo’. But someone has to let her know that singing comes with a lot of drama behind it to win a competition. She just stood there frozen. Her fans will certainly have to text her magic number E29 all day to take her to the grand finale.
Lemnel Chester tried his best with ‘All that I am’ by Joe, but he will have to bring his ‘A’ Game to the stage if he intends to go to the finals. And of course his number to keep him singing is E30.
Mickael Sam was a ‘smooth operator’, bringing to the platter one of the most sensual and stirring renditions of All for one’s ‘I swear’. He possesses an excellent voice but will have to bring more showmanship if he goes to the next round of the competition. Fans have to keep texting his number E31 to 620 8683.
The man from Sophia, Kentroy Allicock just miserably failed to impress the judges.  This contestant was brought back by a wildcard selection and just presented the same lame performance as he did Rubin Stutters’ ‘Flying Without Wings.’ And to think he had the gall to be rude to the judges as they pointed this out.  He was hotly arguing with them and making the silly excuse about having only one rehearsal session.
That aside the competition was well organised and orchestrated by the GT&T Blue Power team.
