POLICE Sports Club’s (PSC) impressive performance in the preliminary round of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) organised Noble House Seafoods sponsored two day second division competition, was enough to hand them the winners accolades over Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) yesterday.

Meeting the Bourda boys in the final on their home ground, PSC saw their hosts win the toss and rattle up 321 in their first innings just before the close of play on the first day, with Treon Forde (86), Bernard Bailey (64) and Martin Pestano Belle 62 leading the GCC batting.
Heavy morning showers rendered day two to a one hour fight for survival and when play got underway at 15:53 hrs, PSC safely negotiated the 19 overs they were asked to bat, even though they were precariously placed on 39 for 4 at the end of it all.
Under the rules of the tournament, which are likely to be revisited, PSC were awarded the victors by virtue of having more outright wins in the group stage of the tournament, despite GCC finishing with more points.
Cleon Critchlow removed Ameer Mohamed for 1 in the third over with a smart catch at the wicket by Pestano-Belle and GCC should have had a second wicket, but Manny Forde failed to hold on to a regulation chance at mid off when Troy Benn attempted to loft Devon Lord over that area.
Despite a few plays-and-misses and airy shots, Benn and Pernell London were able to blunt the attack for seven overs, until Benn (11) ran out of luck when he edged Almando Doman to slip, where Forde safely completed the catch to make the score 27 for 2.
That became 27 for 3 when semi final centurion Randolph Knights, who was later named tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP), was bowled by Doman without scoring following which London offered Pestano-Belle another catch, this time off Lord for 18 at 35/4.
In rapidly fading light Sheldon Agard and Eric Angel safely negated the remaining four overs from Doman and Lord as Police closed on 39 for 4 in 19 overs against the bowling of Doman who took 2 for 9, while Forde was awarded the man of the match for his first innings 86.
At the brief presentation ceremony that followed, Knights along with Ace Warriors, Ryan Jones (Best Bowling), GNIC’s Jermaine Grovesnor (Best Batsman) and Premchand Sukhdeo (Most Wickets), all received trophies for their individual performances.
Also receiving prizes were Transport Sports Club’s duo Charwayne Mc Pherson (Most Runs) and Keon Morris (Most Catches), Forde (Most Runs in Final), Doman (Best Bowling in Final) and Pestano-Belle (Most Dismissals in Final), while PSC received a trophy, medallions and $100,000 and GCC a trophy, medallions and $60,000.
Umpires Montgomery Chester and Ryan Banwarie, Match Referee Omar Bacchus, along with the third umpire and head groundsman of GCC were all recipients of medallions from the GCA, who received word of the sponsors throwing their support behind the tournament for 2014.
