THE mother of 25-year-old John Darwin Mc Pherson, of 28 Plum Park, Sophia, is grieving over the loss of her son who was brutally beaten to death in the interior location of Oku Backdam, Cuyuni.
Speaking with the Guyana Chronicle last evening from her home, Barbra James explained that she was at work on Wednesday when she got a call from someone who informed her that her son had been beaten in the interior.
The woman said she immediately called the man for whom her son works and informed him about the news she had received. She said the man informed her that he was not in the interior location but rather in the city.
The man however told her that he will call into the camp to find out what is really going on and get back to her. The man kept his promise and when he called her back, he informed her that her son’s hand was broken.
According to Ms. James, she was sitting at her sister’s boutique on Wednesday evening at about 19:00hrs, when her son’s employer came and told her that they are bringing out three of the young men from the area and one of them is dead.
The dead one was her son.
She said that the last time he was out of the area was in February. According to her she spoke to her son on Tuesday night when he called her and she was using the opportunity to encourage the 25 year old to give his life back to the Lord. She added that he was once baptized but had backslidden.
She said that she was told that some claimed that her son stole a mining tool which is used to recover gold and precious rocks. The woman said that the persons who called her told her that her son was nowhere near the camp where the mining tool was stolen.
Barbra James told the Chronicle that she was further told that her son was tied up “like an iguana” and beaten to the point that his hands were broken in three places, He had a broken foot and lacerations to the head and back.
Asked about the type of son John was, his mother smiled as she related that he was a like a “network” who linked the family and brought all of them together. She said that he was the only male among three children and was known to be a very light and jovial person.
He worked as a service man for the mining equipment and machines used in the extraction of gold in the camp that he worked.
The police are continuing their investigations into the matter.
