I WRITE on behalf of the West Demerara Arya Samaj to condole the passing of the popular Pandit Reepu who undoubtedly was the most admired religious figure in Guyana and in the Guyanese diaspora.
He was a most remarkable individual, a grassroots person. Few had as many followers as he. He was well-known both locally and internationally.
He had supporters far and wide including tens of thousands in North America where he had been held in very high regard. Pandit Reepu has left long-lasting impressions on individuals for his political and religious activism. He served his country and faith with dedication and commitment. He championed the causes of the poor and downtrodden. He fought vociferously against the banning of religious foods and items during the authoritarian PNC era. In spite of political animosity towards him, he never allowed politics or religious differences to come in the way of kindness. And after the restoration of democracy in 1992, he had been very helpful to many groups including
the Arya Samajists in their charitable activities and we are all very grateful for his assistance.
No doubt he was a religious icon who will be long remembered in the same manner as Dr. and Mrs. Jagan for after them, he was the most popular political figure in the country. He unselfishly devoted his life to improve those of others. Political and religious life in Guyana won’t be the same again without Pt. Reep. May God grant him eternal
rest and bring comfort to his family.
