As taxi slams into pick-up… Five persons escape watery grave …taxi driver tells police ‘Is me fault me ain’t see the pickup’

THE driver of an Indian Chief taxi was heading south along Stone Avenue yesterday morning when he failed to stop at the junction of Lamaha Street and Stone Avenue, and slammed into a Toyota SUV which was heading west along Lamaha Street.

altWhen questioned by the police as the reason for not stopping at the corner, his explanation was that he “did not see the pickup”.
The impact caused the SUV to spin out of control and end up in the Lamaha Street canal.
The driver of the taxi refused to speak to this publication when approached for a comment and became abusive when his picture was taken.
He was however reprimanded by police officers who were on the scene and reminded the man that the reporters have a job to do.
The man after the accident was seen sitting on the parapet and appeared lost as he pondered his next move and the additional expenses he has placed himself in. Contacted last evening, the taxi service where the man worked was not aware that a vehicle with the company’s logo was involved in an accident.alt
Meanwhile, speaking with this publication at the scene of the accident, driver of the SUV, Joseph Charles said that he was heading west along Lamaha Street at a reasonable rate when the car slammed into the rear of his vehicle.
The man said that he had in the vehicle his wife, daughter and grand children at the time of the accident. Charles added that after the SUV began spinning, following the impact, it was heading to a tree which could have resulted in the loss of lives.
altCharles said that he tried in vain to control the vehicle but it continued to go into the direction of the tree and he managed to steer it into the trench and quickly exited the vehicle and got the rest of his family out.
In addition to Joseph Charles, Ulanda, Orlando, and Orlana Baker, and Jennifer Charles were also in the vehicle. Orlando is eight, while his sister, Orlana Baker, is 14 months.
The man said that based on his initial inspection of the vehicle, it seems as if there is some damage to the computer which controls the electrical systems of the SUV. The police are investigating the accident and the driver of the car was taken into police custody to assist with initial investigations.
