LEONARD Moriah, 30, of Lot 235 Zeskendren, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to charges of robbery under arms and possession of a dangerous weapon yesterday.
He appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman, where it was alleged that, on Wednesday, March 20, at Amla Avenue, Prashad Nagar, Georgetown, being armed with a gun, he robbed Samuel Haripal of a Guyana passport, a United States Green Card, medical supplies valued $200,000 and US$2,500, two gold chains worth US$2000, one gold band priced at US$1500 and five gold rings with a value of $400,000, making a total loss of $1,710,000 to the virtual complainant.
Moriah was also charged with having, the same day, also at Amla Avenue, at gunpoint, robbed Omeshwar Haripal, of one ‘Toyota Fielder’ waggon valued $2,500,000, one BlackBerry torch cell phone worth $60,000 and one wristwatch worth $15,000, making a total loss of $2,575,000.
It was further alleged that, on March 27, in Norton Street, Werk-en-Rust, another part of Georgetown, he was found with one .45 round of ammunition, without being the holder of a licence.
Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt, prosecuting, successfully objected to bail for the defendant, based on the nature of the offences, value of the stolen articles and the dangerous weapon used.
Moriah was remanded to prison until April 18.
