Cabinet sees civil aviation sector evolving dynamically – Dr. Luncheon

AS Guyana celebrates its centenary of civil aviation, Cabinet has noted that the local civil aviation sector is growing dynamically and evolving to the satisfaction and benefit of stakeholders in the country.

This is according to Head of the Presidential Secretariat and Secretary to the Cabinet, Dr. Roger Luncheon, who made the disclosure during his weekly post-Cabinet media briefing at the Office of the President in Georgetown on Tuesday.
Dr. Luncheon observed that the centenary of civil aviation activities is being celebrated under the theme, “Recognising the past and advancing the future.”  He stated that Cabinet on Tuesday  recognised the civil aviation sector as one that is evolving dynamically in Guyana.
“Cabinet commended the Minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn for the rather successful efforts in presenting the sector and its achievements for Guyanese, and indeed for the Region and the diaspora to become familiar,” he said.
According to Luncheon, Cabinet noted the specific information that was provided, which detailed the impressive advances made in the sector, particularly over the 1992 to 2012 period of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) administration, and those in the domestic aviation sector.
He further related that one of the areas which Cabinet focused on was the strategic development of the Ogle aerodrome and its contribution to the enhancement of domestic passenger and cargo air transport services in Guyana.
He noted that Minister Benn provided records of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) which showed increases in licensed operators in the domestic civil aviation sector, and the number of licensed aircraft that are engaged in scheduled and non-scheduled services in the hinterland.
In addition, he said that the considerable and continuous efforts being made to rehabilitate and develop the airstrips in the hinterland region were also noted.
Moreover, he added that Benn did not exclude attention to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) expansion project, which he insisted complemented the advances being made in the domestic aviation service sector.
The role of the regulator, GCAA, was also highlighted at the Cabinet meeting, according to Dr. Luncheon, and particularly the capacity building in the authority in the face of the rapid development in the sector.
He stated that the turning of the sod at Ogle for the construction of the headquarters for the GCAA, which was done last Saturday, was also highlighted by Cabinet.
