More than 20 persons displaced in Tiger Bay fire : …President Ramotar promises to help them rebuild

FIRE which was reportedly ignited by two children on Tuesday night destroyed about nine wooden houses in Tiger Bay, Georgetown, displacing more than 20 persons, including children. At the scene yesterday, one of the displaced, James Meredith, told the Guyana Chronicle that the fire started shortly after 21:00hrs at a building aback of his house, and within minutes the raging flames engulfed the wooden shacks.
He noted that the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) responded promptly with four fire tenders and battled the blaze and contained the flames to that section.
Meredith said that the firemen after sometime contained the conflagration and he is very pleased with their effort since they did a good job.
Although his kitchen was completely razed and  his living quarters water-soaked and scorched, Meredith  said that he will make do and try to clean up a bit so he can stay there until he can garner funds to construct his house at a plot of land he was allocated some time ago by the Ministry of Housing.

He noted that the residents of Tiger Bay are also pleased with the presence of President Donald Ramotar, who visited the area yesterday morning and had a meeting with those affected.
Ramotar has since pledged his support and told the homeless that the government is willing to aid in the construction of their houses at their allocated plots of land.
During the fire on Tuesday night, Minister of Works and Hydraulics Robeson Benn and Minister of Public Service, Jennifer Westford also showed up and spoke with some of the fire victims.
Some of the victims who were at the scene yesterday said that they are trying to salvage valuables from the rubble, but are unsure of their next move since many of them were unable to save much.
Meanwhile, fire on Tuesday at La Parfaite Harmonie Primary/Nursery School, West Bank Demerara, ripped through a section of the school while students were sitting the National Grade Six Assessment exams and on Monday night fire also destroyed the living quarters of the head teacher and other teachers at Bygeval Secondary School, Chelsea Park, West Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara.
