THE Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Bartica Neighborhood Council, under the chairmanship of Oliver Benjamin, is tackling a new problem of illegal vending. Speaking with this newspaper on the challenges before the newly-appointed body, he noted that it attained office in November, 2012, and was confronted with a number of issues, including illegal vending on First Avenue.
He said that lately there are a number of vendors along the avenue and it was discovered that they are not from the community.
The police have been informed and a new screening process was introduced and it is being monitored by the IMC.
The chairman noted that in some cases, the vendors who are not from Bartica would sleep in the small spaces where their tent stalls are setup on the shoulder of the road, and in some cases, they would rent space in front of regular businesses.
The IMC has now identified a new arcade area at Mongrippo, where some 48 spots would be rented under the various categories – fish and meat vending, snackette, salon and barber shop, hardware and boutique.
He said that persons already have been allocated their spots and are awaiting the completion of all the stalls.
He explained that it is an initiative aimed at establishing a new vending area to relieve the congestion on First Avenue.
Last Sunday, with the assistance of inmates of the Mazaruni Prisons, the community came out in a ‘clean up’ exercise which saw the residents responding overwhelmingly to bring about a new look Bartica.
Meanwhile, works are ongoing to deal with the garbage situation at the Second Avenue location, as the contractor, Cevon’s Waste Management, had failed to commence work at a new landfill site.
