Fitness walk kicks off local aviation centenary observance

SOME 100 persons participated last Saturday in a fitness walk organised by the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) to start a week of activities marking the centenary anniversary of the local sector. Among those taking part were staff members of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, the Aviation School and Roraima Group of Companies.
The procession started off north in Duke Street, Kingston, and continued east in Eve Leary, east along Carifesta Avenue, south onto Vlissengen Road, west onto Thomas Road, north into Camp Road, west back into Eve Leary and returning south into Duke Street.
Also participating were Public Works Minister, Robeson Benn and Director General of the GCAA, Zulficar Mohamed.
The minister, while admitting that it was his first ever such exercise, reminded the other walkers that the sector continues to expand and that those who served in the past are very important to the further development of the industry locally.
Other aspects of the milestone observance include cricket and football competitions, career talks, watery welcome for the first flight this coming Saturday, sod turnings for the extension of the CJIA terminal and the GCAA head office, a social gathering for women in aviation, exhibition, airshow by Brazilian Smoke Squadron the coming Sunday, a symposium on the future of aviation in Guyana, March 26 live call-in quiz on NCN, and a dinner and award ceremony that will also see the launching of the 100 years of aviation magazine.
