Sheema Mangar murder… Two and a half years on, no justice, parents lament –Police still awaiting DNA results from Barbados

AFTER two and a half years, the parents of Sheema Mangar still await justice for the murder of their bank employee daughter and are hoping for a miracle since they have so many questions but no answers.

altSheema’s mother, Radica Thakoor, speaking from her residence in Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, yesterday said that the homicide of their loved one has left an indelible pain and has impacted them with such grief it is very overwhelming.
The grieving woman stated that her husband, teenage son and herself just go through the motion of life and since Sheema’s murder they are yet to regain normalcy.
The former Demerara Bank staffer who was killed on September 10, 2010   was at North Road and Camp Street in Georgetown waiting for transportation when her Blackberry cell phone was snatched from her. The 21-year-old chased after the robber who entered a motorcar that drove off and she placed herself in front of the vehicle in an effort to stop the thief but was run over and the car dragged her several feet.
Public-spirited citizens rushed her to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), from where she was transferred to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and died there the next day.
Initially two suspects were held but later released and although other persons were questioned, no one was ever charged with the crime.

Mrs. Thakoor told the Guyana Chronicle that up to last week she visited Police Headquarters, Eve Leary, in an effort to get an update on her daughter’s case but was unable to see the Crime Chief since he was out of office.
To date, the family still visits Sheema’s graveside for consolation as  it has been very difficult to cope and  so grief stricken Mrs. Thakoor has been  that  she fell ill, she said.
The woman added that since her daughter’s murder they have heard so many things but no one has since come forward with any new information that may aid in the investigation.
Mrs. Thakoor is of the opinion that the police handled the investigation poorly and failed to preserve evidence because to date they are still awaiting the DNA results.
She pointed out that she has been constantly trying to find out about the case from  the police and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) but they have had very little to say and the family feels that justice has been delayed.
Mrs. Thakoor said that Sheema was the light of their lives and since her murder it has been very dim and they have been trying to adjust to the loss but cannot seem to get over it because the perpetrators are roaming free.
On January 7, 2013,the police said they were still awaiting the DNA results from Barbados in relation to the September 10, 2010 murder of Sheema Mangar, Deputy Commissioner (Law Enforcement) Seelall Persaud said.
He told the Guyana Chronicle that samples from the piece of her Demerara Bank uniform and hair recovered from under a motor car that reportedly struck her were sent to the Caribbean island for examination.
The Crime Chief said local police have since been in contact with their overseas counterparts but the analysis is yet to be completed and that is stalling the investigation process here.
