POLICE reported that on Friday between 01:00hr and 04:00 hrs a Brazilian miner was fatally shot when several men with firearms boarded a mining dredge in the Essequibo River in the Omai area and held up the workers and demanded gold and cash.
It was reported that four Brazilian men and a woman, and two Guyanese men were held at gunpoint and tied up and assaulted. During the robbery one of the Brazilian men was fatally shot and according to unconfirmed reports he has been identified as Antonio Dos Santos, 46.
Police investigators have been dispatched to the scene.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident at about 14:40 hrs on Friday in Georgetown, Brazilian Marcia Maria Martins, 45, of Vlissengen Road was in front of a store on Regent Street when she was attacked by a man who was armed with a handgun.
The assailant grabbed her handbag and a scuffle ensued during which she was shot and injured in her left thigh. She was subsequently admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
The armed man carrying the bag which reportedly contained $70,000 in cash and a quantity of gold jewellery escaped on a motorcycle driven by an accomplice. Police investigations are in progress.
