Barnwell called up to Windies duty, replaced by Ivan – Guyana to face Jamaica and CCC at National Stadium

THAT old saying, “Good things come to he who waits,” can certainly apply to both Demerara Cricket Club’s Christopher Barnwell and Rose Hall Town Gizmos and Gadgets’ first division player Rajiv Ivan, who both received good news yesterday.

Late last year, Barnwell could be overheard expressing his desire to wear the maroon cap once again, since he feels he has the necessary requirements to do so and targeted the recently concluded and final edition of the West Indies Cricket Board’s Caribbean T20 as his launching pad.
Indeed he did launch his career in fine style, earning a place in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL), after catching the eyes of the selectors who scout talents for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB),  for whom he will be lining up alongside the talismanic Christopher Gayle, Daniel Vettori and Trinidad and Tobago’s Ravi Rampaul.
As he was leading his charges through their practice session ahead of yesterday’s WICB Super50 contest against the Windward Islands, the 26 year old Barnwell was greeted with the news of a West Indies call up for the T20 engagement against the visiting Zimbabwe team.
Satisfied with such news, Barnwell and Guyana’s tour selection committee handed Ivan his Super50 debut in yesterday’s game, following which he made 19.
Ivan was also greeted with the news of him being selected by the Guyana Cricket Board senior selection panel to replace Barnwell in Guyana’s Regional 4Day squad, which will also take on the points leading Windward Islands in the third round from Wednesday.
Former West Indies opener Sewnarine Chattergoon, who was overlooked by the selectors for various reasons at the start of the season, finds himself back into the fray when he left Guyana yesterday for St. Vincent where he will be replacing the pugnacious Trevon Griffith.
According to reports, the left handed DCC opener will leave the national team to join forces with the Sagicor High Performance Centre later this week, which means Chattergoon can be ushered into one of the opening positions for Wednesday’s game, ahead of the 16 year old Tagenarine Chanderpaul.
With such decisions being made by the GCB, only Chanderpaul will journey up to St. Vincent, as former West Indies Under-19 fast bowler Keon Joseph was given the axe, since the team’s management and selectors felt his bowling was off.
Meanwhile, cricket lovers in Guyana can return the bright smiles to their faces, as a reliable source within the GCB, who chose to remain anonymous, told Chronicle Sport that Guyana will be playing its final two matches in both the Regional 4Day and Super50 against Combined Campuses and Colleges and Jamaica, at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence in April.
