Essequibo Coast residents want new ferries to operate at all tides

Farmers and businessmen on the Essequibo Coast and riverine areas have expressed satisfaction that the Transport & Harbours Department has conducted a hydrographic survey on the Parika Supenaam Ferry Service route. This survey was done to determine the way forward in navigating in the existing channel or creating a new channel which would accommodate the new ferries at all tides.
The findings would be released to the Minister of Public Works and other officials of the Maritime Administration Department to determine whether dredging of the existing channel is necessary or a new navigation path has to be created for the operation of the ferries.
Guyana Chronicle spoke with farmers aboard the MV Kanawan this week and they indicated that the service has improved since the introduction of the two new Chinese ferries on the Parika-Supenaam route as the boats  can now transport a larger number  of vehicles, including trucks with farmers produce and other goods  to and from the Essequibo Coast.
They noted too that commuters should come to grips with the changes in the departure time of the ferry since this depends on the highest tide.
In the meantime, they commended T&HD for their promptness since the introduction of the ferries in the Parika-Supenaam service.
Other commuters expressed the hope that they would see the service being extended to Leguan and Wakenaam during harvest period so as to accommodate the transportation of farmers produce at these two locations.
However, they noted that this would require the rehabilitation of  some of the existing stellings at these locations.
When this newspaper contacted the General Manager of T&HD, Ms. Marcelene Merchant for a comment she noted that a number of stellings have been identified in  the 2013 development works programme and these  will commence after the 2013 budget has been passed by the National Assembly.
She also noted that other facilities will be improved at stellings and wharves to enhance the service provided by the  department.
Asked about the Georgetown North West District ferry service, she noted that at present her department is looking at avenues to bring about improvements.   This she explained would involve a number of factors and  decisions at the government level would be necessary.
Meanwhile, businessmen and farmers are expecting by mid-year to see the regularization of the ferry service following  the findings of the hydrographic survey and action taken for the ferries to operate in  any tidal condition.
