AS Mashramani draws near, Mash camps are working hard on completing their costumes in time for the Road March and parade tomorrow which is being held under the theme ‘Reflecting Creativity, Embracing Diversity’. The Government Information Agency (GINA) reported that, yesterday, it visited the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) and the Ministry of Education Mash camps where designers and their helpers were busily working on some beautiful costumes.
This year, GTU for the first time will be participating in the float parade under the theme ‘Moulding the nation’, and there will be a 50-member strong contingent of teachers decked out in very colourful costumes.
McDonald said the costumes are being created in line with the Mashramani theme and at the same time are meant to teach youths how to be respectful to citizens as they grow older. The actual float will depict aspects such as respect for teachers, honesty, and responsibility of a child, teachers and parents among others.
She said the teachers are very excited to be a part of the activity and that she is optimistic they will put on a good show on Mash day.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education launched their ‘Blazing the trail of knowledge’ Mash band which was created by Designer Nelsion Nurse. The ministry’s staff displayed their very “fiery” costumes which will be worn by 50 revellers in the medium costume category.
This year the ministry is passionate about emphasising the theme for Mashramani 2013 which is ‘Reflecting Creativity, Embracing Diversity’.
Chief Education Officer (Secondary), Melcita Bovell said the actual Mash theme forms part of the ministry’s dedicated plan to ensure every child throughout Guyana receives an education.
“We talk about embracing diversity, inclusiveness and we are making efforts to intensify so that we can have more teachers trained in the education system,” Bovell said.
She added that the ministry will continue to reach out to each child in the school system, whether the child is physically or mentally challenged or a slow or fast learner.
Bovell also mentioned that the ministry is gearing itself to embrace every child with diversity. “We are not only taking it to the city, but all across the country,” she said.
The designer said that the costumes were created in keeping with the concept of ‘inclusive education’ and he is optimistic that the band will make an impression at the parade.
