It is not about just opposing

I HAVE been a strong opposition member over the last decade until one day I woke up and realised I was just wasting my time opposing the same programmes that I was trying to champion and decided to see where I can work with the government of the day to make our nation a better place.  I will still continue to speak towards a better economic future for all Guyanese.
It is not about just opposing that I have learned, but to sit at the table and discuss better ways for improvement in all areas of governance, politics, economic and social areas.
What we have experienced recently in Parliament and actions by the opposition

parties, I am just simply appalled.
Instead of championing areas where they can contribute with the government to make our nation better, their main goal seems to be stopping a minister from speaking.   If that is a measurement of success, then it shows their incompetence.  We have not seen one major economic initiative proposed by the opposition that will benefit Guyana.

The purpose of this article is to address the anger with which the opposition has targeted the Chinese community.   The issue of the Marriott is very straightforward.  The Marriott is a good thing for Guyana.  Just look at how many are disappointed that Delta Airlines is pulling out and the impact it will have.   The fact that the Chinese got the contract to build the hotel within a set period of time and with complex construction engineering should not be looked at in a negative manner.   The fact that there is not any large contingent of Guyanese workers, if any,  should only be a matter of concern that we have not had the exposure necessary to construct multi-large buildings.   There are competent construction engineers in Guyana but we do not have the magnitude necessary to contract all of them towards one such project.
I drove by the opposition protest and only noticed elite politicians with placards.  Not one mason or carpenter was there unless they were politicians.  Why, because all of them are employed. I can speak for myself and a few of my friends, when we are looking for workers for construction, they are very difficult to find and the level of training is sometimes atrocious.   They first need to go to a technical school to learn the art of painting, masonry and carpentry.  Maybe the opposition should be fighting for more technical schools so our people can be able to compete better in the future.   Most of the work I get is substandard.  One just needs to drive by my building in Queenstown to see the crooked step, my newly painted roof that looked as if it were spot treated.   I have now found one great carpenter I must say.
There is a building going up opposite me, the owner is a Chinese national.  All the workers on the construction site are Guyanese.  Why aren’t the Guyanese Chinese protesting that work?
The point here is simple.  We need to look at capital projects in the context of how they move our nation forward.   Most of the staff when the Marriott is finish will come from the current service industry.  Those working at the Pegasus and other similar areas will have to step up their standards to meet the level of the Marriott.
The fact that the Chinese embassy, the Chinese People, the Guyanese Chinese nationals are being targeted is not good for our country.  In fact, every time a Chinese ship docks at the wharf, it is Guyanese that off load, it is Guyanese that move the cargo by trucks , it is the Guyanese porters on Regent Street that off load the truck, it is our gas stations that  supply the gas.   You get the point.  All are economic multipliers.  We all benefit.
I call on the opposition to have meaningful discussions in Parliament on economic improvement that will enhance our nation, versus arguing whether a minister speaks or not.  What an achievement for over a year.  Sad!
