Felony defendant on $100,000 bail must lodge passport

JUNIOR Dey, 24, of Lot 18 Second Street, Alberttown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, on Wednesday, when he pleaded not guilty to attempting to commit a felony.

Particulars of the offence said, last February 12, on Croal Street, also in Georgetown, accompanied by another, he attempted to rob Hemchand Sugrim.
Police Inspector Burgette Grant, prosecuting, said the virtual complainant (VC) was standing on the street when the defendant rushed up and lashed him in the chest with a belt. Then the latter grabbed Sugrim’s briefcase while his companion dealt him four cuffs to his face.
Defence Counsel George Thomas claimed Dey was waiting for a bus when the incident occurred and it is a case of mistaken identity.
The lawyer requested that his client be placed on reasonable bail.
The prosecutor did not object to the grant but pressed for the amount to be substantial and the defendant to lodge his passport at the police station.
Dey was ordered to post $100,000 surety and return to court on March 8.
