Prosecution closes case in Linden Highway rum spree murder trial

THE prosecution in the Linden Highway rum spree murder trial, wherein Robert Abrahim is indicted for the murder of Ganesh Singh, closed its case although all its witnesses did not turn up to testify.

After Prosecutor Miss Diana Kaulesar, who, in association with Miss Renita Singh, announced on Tuesday that she was closing her case at that stage, defence counsel, Mr Huckumchand indicated to the court that he wished to make a no-case submission in the absence of the jury.
When the trial resumes this morning, the jury will be sent out of sight and hearing while Justice Dawn Gregory, presiding, will listen to arguments from the defence and the prosecution.
The State had set out to prove that, on January 10, 2008, the deceased Ganesh Singh was drinking with another person at a farm at Long Creek on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway when the accused, Robert Abrahim, who was offered a drink and refused, later decided to have a few drinks with them.
During the drinking spree, Ganesh Singh allegedly picked up a 22-inch cutlass and lashed the accused on his head and hand.

As a consequence, the accused rushed to a room, where he armed himself with a cutlass with which he stabbed Singh in the face, causing him later to die from an injury which the doctor at a post-mortem examination described as hypovolemic shock.
