Police probing shooting death of trainee cop – mother bemoans police response time

THE police are continuing their investigations into the shooting death of trainee constable 22011 Harold Sukhai of 646 Tuschen Housing scheme.

The police constable was shot during what is being investigated as a robbery while he was walking with his girlfriend of three weeks through the village.
The dead man’s mother said yesterday morning that her son had just left her home at approximately 20:30 hrs on Sunday night with his girlfriend, saying that he was accompanying her home before making his way back to the Police Training School in Georgetown.
The woman said that Sunday night was the first time she had seen the young lady, who is a school teacher, when her son brought her to meet the family. The elderly woman said that whenever her son visits the home on weekends she would usually see him off and he would use the main road to exit the community.
According to her when she saw him off on Sunday night he left the home via the normal route but when she got word that he was shot and killed and went to see him she realised that her son was on the “back street” and questioned how he ended up there since that is not a route he would usually use because it is desolate.
The woman said that when she visited the scene she saw her son in a position which suggested that he was made to kneel before he was shot by his attackers.
The dead man’s sister told this publication that she last saw her brother on Saturday night when he came to visit her. She said that it was on Sunday night that she received a call at approximately 20:45 hrs informing her that her brother was killed.
She explained that when she arrived on the scene she attempted to check her brother for a pulse but was restrained from doing so by persons there. She said that she was adamant in doing so since she was of the view that the young policeman was still alive. However, her checks proved to confirm the views expressed by those who had gathered at the location.

Mother questions police response time
Yesterday morning the man’s mother said that she was hurt that her son met his demise in that manner and noted that the police took almost two hours before they could have arrived on the scene.
The angry woman said that her son may have been alive today had he not met the female companion he was with at the time of his demise and who he has been speaking to for less than a month.
Meanwhile, the girl’s mother said that her daughter might have been dead today had she not been wearing any jewellery since she is of the view that the cop recruit was killed after the bandits did not get much from him.
The young lady said that she was robbed of her gold chain, ring and hand bands. In recalling the ordeal she explained to this publication that they were walking out of the street when three men attacked them from behind.
According to her account, two of the men grabbed her boyfriend while one stayed with her. The two who grabbed her boyfriend dragged him approximately six feet from where the other one made her stand.
According to the young school teacher, almost thirty seconds later she heard a gunshot. As the shot rank out the man who was holding her captive at knifepoint ran from the scene.
It was at that point that she made a dash for cover.
She recalled receiving a call from her boyfriend on the night of the shooting and he told her that he wanted to take her to meet his family.
She said that she was hesitant at first and told him that she was at the internet café and would prefer to meet with him on his way back to college.
However the young policeman insisted and they went to the young man’s home.  The teacher said that there she met with the boy’s mother, father and sister and everyone seemed very happy at the young union.
The Guyana Chronicle was told that a while before the shooting residents had observed three strange boys sitting on a bridge in the area which also serves as the entrance to the community.
Up to press time the police seemed empty handed as they searched for clues and suspects in the shooting of the young police rank.
Prior to his joining the Guyana Police Force in November of 2012, Harold Sukhai graduated as a mechanic from the GuySuCo Training School.
