JUSTICE Navindra Singh yesterday sentenced 26-year old policeman, Kevin Edward Waterman to 31 years imprisonment for the unlawful killing of his lover, Woman Police, Eleanor Jones.
P.C. Waterman had shot and killed his lover in November 2006, following allegations that she was unfaithful.
But at his trial yesterday, he expressed remorse and told the judge when asked whether he had anything to say, “Nothing that I say or do at this time, could bring her back.”
According to law, in the circumstances of the case, the judge had the power to impose as much as 48 years, but after deducting years for mitigation, incarceration etc., the prisoner was sentenced to 31 years.
The accused did not waste the court’s time. He pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter from the outset.
Defence lawyer, Mr. Peter Hugh, who had made a stirring plea in mitigation had begged the court for leniency.
The judge recalled the situation in the country relating to violent crimes and expressed the hope that the sentence imposed will serve as a deterrent to those who are mindful to commit similar crimes.
The prisoner reportedly joined the Guyana Police Force in August 2004. He was stationed at the Tactical Service Unit, and in 2006, he was transferred to Linden where he was attached to the Wisroc Anti Crime Patrol.
Investigations by the Probation Department revealed that while in training with the Guyana Police Force, he became acquainted with Eleanor Jones, deceased who was a serving member of the Guyana Police Force and they established a visiting relationship while they were both working in Linden during the period 2006 to July 2007.
The probation officer said that it was divulged that he frequented and slept at her home at Linden. It was reported that they would have arguments over her alleged promiscuous lifestyle, especially with prominent members of the community, and he would seek the intervention of her parents, siblings and colleagues.
During interviews with the accused, he told the probation officers that on a number of occasions he attempted suicide and would also cut his body when she refused to listen to him as he wanted stability in their relationship.
In conclusion, the probation report said consequently, due to the alleged promiscuous lifestyle of the victim and her constant psychological berating of the accused led to his becoming frustrated and confrontational.
