DIRECTOR of Sports Neil Kumar hails Professor Aubrey Bishop, who recently passed at age 81, as a true sportsman and a model for other aspiring student athletes to follow.
“Professor Aubrey Bishop was an excellent student, attended Queen’s College and then proceeded to make a career in the legal profession. During his distinguished career, he held various offices in the academic field, extra curricula activities and his religious endeavours.” Kumar said of Bishop. While Professor Bishop was extremely good at cricket and even headed the Competitions Committee of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) and played well at hockey and table tennis, it was at football that he made noteworthy advancement.
Kumar recounted Professor Bishop as a man who “represented his school (Queen’s College), Club (Red Hammers) and his country. As an administrator, Professor Bishop served as vice president and president of the-then Guyana Football Association where numerous changes for the betterment of the game were implemented”.
The British-trained lawyer, performed duties as Law Professor at the University of Guyana, Supreme High Court Judge, Chief Justice and Chancellor of the Judiciary.
After his active playing days and administrative duties, he took up refereeing and became one of the most talked-about referees.
“His high-quality performances on the field saw him become the second Guyanese to achieve FIFA status. He also presided over the Guyana Football Referees Association and functioned as secretary of the Guyana Olympic Association,” said Kumar.
Professor Bishop even as a very busy person, he did not separate himself from his Heavenly Father. Again, because of his love, commitment and dedication, he served as the Vice-president of the Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas.
“The all-round excellence of this exceptional Guyanese did not escape the attention of the Government of Guyana,” Kumar added, stating that “as a consequence he was rewarded with great respect, achieving the National Awards of Cacique Crown of Honour, and the Order of Roraima, two of Guyana’s highest awards”.
The long-standing Sports Director extended his sympathy to the relatives of Professor Bishop, noting, “Condolences are also expressed to his wife, Dr Carole Maison-Bishop, his children, relatives, friends and the many whose lives he so affectionately touched.”
