MENTALLY challenged Leon Alphonso, 38, was shot and injured by the police when they went to his home in an effort to arrest him after receiving a report of alleged damage to property, assault, threatening behaviour and indecent exposure.

Police reported that at about 05:00hrs yesterday, ranks went to his home at Danielstown, Essequibo Coast.
During efforts to apprehend him, Alphonso attacked the police with a cutlass and a claw bar, and he was shot in his left foot, police said.
Alphonso was taken to the Suddie Hospital where he was treated and sent away. He is in police custody, and investigations are in progress.
